The government of Kosovo has banned cryptocurrency mining Tuesday in an effort to reduce electricity consumption. This is in response to the country’s worst energy crisis since the beginning of the decade, which was caused by production outages.

Artane Rizvanolli, Economy and Energy Minister, stated in a statement that “all law enforcement agencies will cease the production of the activity in cooperation with other relevant institution which will identify the locations where cryptocurrency production is occurring.”

Many young people have taken up crypto mining because of the low power prices in Kosovo.

Last month, authorities were faced with power outages at coal-fired power plants and high import prices.
